Bowling Philosophy-March 2010

  1. Tommy, nice post, even if you and I disagree on a few of your points.

As an older guy, and I think a lot of us older guys are the biggest fans of the PBA and of PBA telecasts, I think it would be fantastic if Walter Ray won Player of the Year again and would be no detriment to the PBA or their telecasts' popularity. I suspect that O'Neill will win it. He's doing well this week too and has a shot at the telecast Sunday.

Second, I realize that the bowlers and the public place a much greater emphasis on so-called majors than they do on regular tournaments, but, the way I see it, a tournament is a tournament. You either match up well, get good breaks, and win the tournament or you don't. It may be more impressive if you win on a tougher pattern than if you don't, but just calling the tournament a "major" doesn't make winning it intrinsically better than winning another title.

I also disagree that, if I understand you correctly, all that really matters, in terms of what makes a bowler good, is how he does on Sundays. I actually think the best indicator of a bowler's quality is how he does in round-robin match play. The guy (or gal) who leads after the end of match play is the one who, in my opinion, did best in the tournament and not the one who wins one, two, or three games on TV on Sunday, and the bowler who exhibits the most overall consistency throughout the season, regardless of how many titles he wins, is the bowler who performed best that season.

  2. Steve, all great points. That is the kind of discussion I want to hear out of my blogs which is rebuttals. To clarify the last point, I knew that statement was going to be controversial but I feel it neccessary to expound that more clearly in another blog shortly. Hopefully, it will make more sense. As for the Walter Ray point, I think historically, it would be tremendous to see him at age 50 win POY #7 but for the future of the sport, O'Neill has to grab the imginary torch and be the man. He's got the pedigree, the amateur background, and the talent to carry the PBA for the next 10-12 years. It would make it all the more sweeter if he could face Walter Ray on TV so that we can have a true match for Player of the Year. The major discussion, I will stick by it: they matter more and hopefully mean more to the players.

Again, I am glad we disagree-makes for good conversation in the future.

  3. There's no doubt that the players think more of the majors than they do of the other tournaments, the conditions are usually tougher, the money's better, and the exemptions are longer.
