Great summation of a fantastic season. However, I'm puzzled by one thing. You appear to question WRWJ's PoY award. I don't understand how anyone could. No one won more tournaments than he did or as much money as he did, and no one did better than or as well as him in any of the other major stats that I'm aware of.
Steve, this is nothing against the tremendous season Walter Ray has had but I have been on a literal 4-5 year crusade about this award. This is the Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year award!!! My personal belief is that there should be a more concrete and exciting way to determine who the game's best was for that season. As far I saw it, this year was a 3 way tie. The tiebreaker was the Harry Smith points list which I can understand (most consistent player week in and out), but the POY always leaves me with a cliffhanger.
I guess I'm still not clear on precisely how the PoY is determined, and you may well be correct that it could be decided in a more "concrete" way, although I'm not sure how it could be both more concrete AND "more exciting," since the more concrete or objective a system is, the less suspenseful uncertainty or "excitement" it seems likely to engender. But wouldn't you say that WRWJ would have deservedly won the award this season by no matter what reasonable system might have been employed to make the determination?
One additional point, Tommy. I don't know that I'd characterize Chris Barnes' season as "a lost season to say the very least." He was fourth in official earnings at $116,510.00, second in average, tied for first in cashes, tied for first in match play appearances, tied for second in championship round appearances, fourth in PoY point rankings, and fourth in season points.
It's true that he didn't win any titles, but to finish as well as he did in all the statistical categories indicates that he nevertheless bowled pretty darn consistently throughout the season. And had he not had an 800+ combined series thrown at him by three of his competitors in the championship matches of three tournaments, two of them majors, and an 800+ series bowled against him in the opening round of a single elimination bracket tournament, he might well have won at least one title and competed more successfully for the title in another tournament.
I know that expectations run so high for the widely proclaimed "best bowler on tour" that anything less than winning at least two or three titles and dominating all the statistical categories can subjectively seem like a "lost season." But it seems to me that a more objective appraisal is that 2009-2010 may have been a disappointing season for someone of Barnes' obvious skill, but it was hardly a lost one, And I'm thinking that he's going to do considerably better next season.
